Accreditation
Accreditation is the most important factor to consider when you are thinking of online degrees. US Department of Education states that accreditation is important as it:
Is a seal of verification that a college or university meets established standards?
It helps students in identifying online degree programs that are accepted by employers.
With the advent of Diploma Mills and their fraudulent activities it is a must for students to check the accreditation in order to avoid future disappointments.
Related research shows that recognized institutions with accredited online degree programs carry more weight with employers than such degrees awarded by less reputed schools.
Two Types of Accreditation
There are two types of accreditation available for the online degree programs: institutional and specialized. The most important institutional accreditation in the U.S. comes from one of six regional accrediting associations (Middle States, New England, North Central, Northwest, Southern, Western). These associations grant membership to all regionally accredited educational institutions (including Harvard, Princeton and Yale), and acknowledge one another's accreditation.
A specialized accrediting body evaluates particular units, schools, or programs including the Online Education Degree programs within an institution. Specialized accreditation, also called program accreditation, is often associated with national professional associations such as those for engineering, medicine, and law, or with specific disciplines such as business, teacher education, psychology, or social work.
So, before you decide to go for an online degree program, try to find whether it has accreditation from a recognized university or a professional association of repute.
Best of luck! Happy Degree Hunting!
